  1. wohoo yes thanks for the reminder. I hope this helps others.

  2. Cool tip.
Although the cd key doesn’t seem to match up to the one on the box.

  3. I have been searching high and low for something like this… I have always hated searching and searching for the codes only to have a virus destroy my computer! Know I can do this whenever I need safely, thank you.

  4. Does not work with my CD. There is no such file.

  5. which version of windows you are using?…i will help you

  6. Ofcourse it only works if your cd is used for unattended installs. Which means that it installs itself with predefined settings in the unattended.txt. And you have to put the code in there.

  7. This only works with certain OEM CDs. for all others, you need to use a product such as ProduKey to recover your key.

  8. This only works if your system was imaged using an unattended install. If you really want it – use the best freeware finder out there:

  9. That or just go and search thepiratebay.org for xp, you can usually find someone smart enough to write the key into a comment :P

  10. XP keys can be hard to find

  11. i can provide u any key if u need…

I have a Dell Windows Xp media center edition CD. I misplaced my cd case which had the product key. UNable to contact Dell because its not cover under warranty anymore and Microsoft is not willing to help. can you provide me with a key for this media center edition.

  13. This doesn’t work on all XP CDs. Only if an unattended script was provided with the CD. This is not required.

This is not a reliable method!

  14. …or better yet, use Ubuntu for your operating system of choice. It’s absolutely free and there are NO viruses. Because it’s Open Source, it’s not commercially driven. No-ones trying to maliciously destroy your computer. Spending your precious time looking for a security key? HA! There are no secrets, no hunting around to unlock anything, none of that. And no risks. This is open and available for EVERYONE, it’s user-friendly and looks terrific on your screen.

So next time you need to format the hard drive, just give it a go. There’s little chance you won’t like it, but if you don’t just reinstall Windows. Nothing lost.

  15. Nice post… I like it like Milk and Company

  16. Ubuntu? Linux Zealot, get a mac :)

  17. Couldn’t you just get one from bittorent?

  18. I tried this with two different XP CD’s, and the same key showes up for both. I think that these keys are for something else.

  19. Or, slipperyelf, you can try one of the many other Linux Distros. ;)
Including, but not limited to Fedora, Slackware, [Open]Suse, or even stuff like FreeBSD and OpenSolaris!

  20. nice post, i like it.

  21. What u need to do is, Just explore the? windows XP CD ,there is a folder called i386

  22. wow, that was really helpful, thank you so much.

  23. Cool tip. When I forget the win xp key, I just know where to look for. Thanks.

  24. Your Windows CD key is either ON THE TOWER OF YOUR COMPUTER, OR ON THE BOTTOM OF YOUR LAPTOP. Jesus Christ people, it’s there. Honestly, it is. Just look.

  25. Genius. I love this idea. It saved me a lot of time and hassle calling Microsoft!!

    This actually works!

  26. Neat tip, but the key doesn’t seem to match on my game system.

  27. nice tip here. i usually use third party tools to find these for though

  28. I use a software called XP Key finder..

  29. Awesome tip! So many times there are lost key codes and trying to find the package can be difficult. I’ll definitely use this next time.

  30. thanks for this tip because I have 4 machines that all run on XP and I had to restore one of them.
    thanks,
    coach

  31. Don’t bother looking in the file Unattend.txt for your XP product key. You will find a key there but, since this file is showing sample answers for setting up an unattended install, the number is the same on all XP disks. I just looked in my XP home disk and my XP Pro disk and the Unattend.txt file was identical, including the key number, in both. As mentioned in other posts use Belarc or the like to find your key in your computer.

  32. Great site . Why you are not updating frequently ??

  33. The key in the file will only get you through the first hurdle (when installing the OP).
It won’t work when you try to activate Windows online.

  34. My God!! it is soooo simple. I was searching for the last 2 hour from my friends. I am still smiling for this great job. I love it man. 100000 thanks from my side.

  35. Interesting.

    Times are a changing.

I like XP but it can be tough to fix sometimes. (But it is still easier for me to understand than NT!)

    Thanks for posting.

  36. Great post, thanks!!

  37. the Cd i downloaded from the internet was same as my system. XP SP2 HOME edition. I used it for a corupted computer as a utility. The serial in CD was difer ofcours from the one that is in the system and running.
